Total RNA was extracted from snap frozen platypus tissues (frontal cortex, pancreas, liver, lung, small intestine, stomach, heart, venom gland, testis, muscle, lymph and kidney) and echidna tissue (small intestine, pancreas, liver, venom gland, heart and brain) using TRIzol (Invitrogen, USA) according to the manufactures instructions
